Gladys Zubiría

Welcome! My name is Gladys Zubiria, a Ph.D. candidate in political science majoring in international relations at Rice University.  I hold a master's degree in Conflict Resolution from the University of Essex and in Political Science from Rice University.  I am originally from Barranquilla, Colombia, and I am a Fulbright-Minciencias 2019 grantee.

My research focuses on peace and conflict studies, with an emphasis on understanding post-conflict outcomes and peace sustainability. I have co-authored work on the use of violence in the Colombian Conflict, as well as on ex-combatants' perceptions of reintegration processes after the peace agreement with FARC.

In my dissertation, I study the role of third parties in contributing to durable peace in post-conflict settings by fostering the belligerent parties' political and social reintegration processes. I study the effect of the use of sanctions and international negotiation on post-conflict outcomes and I explore the role of women in conflict resolution efforts.

I am passionate about teaching. Before coming to Rice, I worked as an instructor at Universidad del Norte in Colombia, where I taught courses on negotiation and conflict resolution, the Colombian Conflict, and a seminar on Conflict and Peace. At Rice, I have been a teaching assistant in Introduction to International Relations, a course on the War in Ukraine, and a solo instructor in Civil Wars.
